چکیده

The strategies of metal tolerance developed by several plants that enable them to survive in metal contaminated and polluted sites. Some of them may accumulate significant concentration of a specific element. The work presented here is part of the on going study in Central Portugal, and it focus only in a preliminary description. We have observed that Apium nodiflorum, Callitriche stagnalis, Lemna minor and Fontinalis antipyretica growing in uraniferous geochemical province of Central Portugal accumulated significant amounts of uranium, whereas Oenanthe crocata excluded uranium. These results are of phytotechnological significance. Key-Words: Aquatic plants, bioaccumulation, phytoremediation, uranium

Phytofiltration of arsenic and cadmium by using an aquatic plant, Micranthemum umbrosum: phytotoxicity, uptake kinetics, and mechanism.

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are noxious and carcinogenic pollutants that can be removed from water by using emerging, ecofriendly, phytofiltration technology that employs Micranthemum umbrosum. After culturing M. umbrosum for 7 days in a hydroponic experiment, accumulation of 1219±44.11 µg As g(-1) and 799.40±30.95 µg Cd g(-1) were observed in the leaves, from 1000 µg As L(-1) and 1000 µg Cd ...

Enrichment and removal of uranyl ions by using polymeric supports: A review

At one hand uranium is an element of considerable technological importance. In nuclear power plants uranium is used as fuel. Other than this, uranium has no significant commercial use. On the other hand uranium is highly toxic and radioactive heavy metal that mainly originates from nuclear-related activities and causes significant environmental and public health problems by its presence in terr...

Cadmium accumulation in the rootless macrophyte Wolffia globosa and its potential for phytoremediation.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution around the world is a serious issue demanding acceptable solutions, one of which is phytoremediation that is both cost-effective and eco-friendly. Removal of Cd from contaminated water using plants with high growth rates and sufficient Cd accumulation abilities could be an appropriate choice. Here, we investigated a potential Cd accumulator, Wolffia, a rootless duckweed w...

Nitrate Bioremoval by Phytotechnology using Utricularia aurea Collected from Eutrophic Lake of Theerthamkara, Kerala, India

The aim of this study was to compare the selected aquatic plants ability to remove nitrate from wastewater. Excess of these nutrients in water can directly affect human health (methemoglobinaemia) or indirectly through the products of secondary pollution include eutrophication. Negative impact of nutrients excess in surface water often causes the destruction of water ecosystems, and therefore, ...
